Lymphedema
in Beverly Hills, CA/span>
Lymphedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid between the skin and muscle that commonly develops in the arms and legs, most commonly caused by damage to the lymph nodes.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LYMPHEDEMA?
The primary symptom of lymphedema is swelling, which can range from moderate to severe. Some patients may have almost imperceptible swelling, while others may find it hard to use the affected limbs. In addition to swelling, other symptoms may include:
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness
- Restricted range of motion
- Aching or discomfort
- Recurring infections
- Hardening and thickening of the skin
CAUSES AND DIAGNOSIS
When lymph vessels cannot properly drain lymphatic fluid, it causes a blockage that leads to swelling. The lymphatic system is meant to transport this lymphatic fluid throughout the rest of the body, flushing away harmful bacteria, viruses, and waste. However, blockage prevents this process from happening and keeps these destructive microorganisms stagnant within the body.
Lymphedema can also be classified as primary or secondary. Primary lymphedema is rare and occurs due to genetics, and can often be linked to Milroy or Meige disease. Secondary lipedema is known to be caused by external factors like surgery, radiation treatment, cancer, and infection.
