About Lipomas

A lipoma is a growth of fat cells encapsulated within fibers and tissues beneath the skin. In most cases, they are found just beneath the surface of the skin and may be located anywhere on the body. Lipomas are benign (noncancerous) but should be examined by a professional when they are discovered to ensure they are not mistaken for something else. Dr. Jaime Schwartz, a board-certified plastic surgeon, is skilled to diagnose and treat patients with confirmed lipomas, as well as the conditions that often accompany the growths. At Total Lipedema Care in Beverly Hills, CA, we help patients cope with their lipoma-associated conditions using a personalized approach. Familial Multiple Lipomatosis

Familial multiple lipomatosis (FML) is a rare genetic defect characterized by the presence of lipomas on the neck, thighs, abdomen, and arms. The rare disorder is likely caused by chromosomal abnormality and is hereditary. FML is the diagnosis given when the conditions affect more than one family member over several generations.

Symptoms of the Condition

Lipomas are typically not tender to the touch and feel soft and doughy when placing pressure on them. In most cases, lipomas are:

  • Just beneath the surface of the skin
  • Located on the arms, shoulders, neck, trunk, and thighs
  • Soft to the touch
  • Small in size
  • Painful if located on a nerve

Causes and Diagnosis

The only understood cause of lipomas is an inheritance. Beyond familial factors, there doesn't seem to be an underlying cause of the growths. Certain risk factors increase your likelihood of developing a lipoma, including age, as individuals between 40 – 60 are most likely to discover a lipoma.

Only a physician should diagnose a lipoma. Although they are rarely serious, they could be confused with a cancerous mass. Anytime a lump is discovered on the body, the growth should be examined and potentially biopsied by your doctor. Dr. Schwartz will rule out the possibility of cancer before helping you understand your condition and potential treatment options.

Treatment Options

Small, discreet, painless lipomas rarely require any form of intervention. But in cases where patients feel insecure, restricted, or pained by a lipoma, Dr. Schwartz may offer treatment. Treatment options could include:

Liposuction – Using a form of liposuction, the lipoma will be removed from beneath the surface of the skin during a minor outpatient procedure.
Surgical removal – A minimal excision extraction technique will be used to surgically remove the lipoma through a small incision.
